b'Outreach: Honoring Our MissionRoberto Varona hustles around setting up tents, chairs, and tables in preparation for the agricultural workers who will be returning from the fields. He pulls out fliers, sets up visuals, and mentally checks off the things he wants to cover that day.Roberto is a Community Health Worker, focusing on health education and information that workers need to know. On the agenda this week is identifying and avoiding heat exhaustion. It is very important that you remember to drink plenty of water, even if you arent very thirsty, and to take breaks every hour, he says to them in Spanish. He illustrates these points with visual aids and gives everyone additional information to take with them.Over the years, Robertos educational sessions have covered everything from proper tooth brushing techniques, to knowing your rights around what to do if an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer shows up at your door.He also used to drive the mobile clinic for the outreach team. I learned everything I know about driving a mobile van from our CEO, Varona laughs. When we got the first van, Gil took me out to a country road, and we rode around together, learning how to drive. When Virginia Garcia upgraded to a large mobile clinic in 2018, Roberto handed in his keys and jumped into education full time.Providing care to the migrant and seasonal farmworker community has been a priority since our founding in 1975. Roberto has been a key part of these efforts for more than 20 years. Its a passion for me, he says. Why would I want to do anything else?#WeAreVirginiaGarcia'
