Farmworker Outreach Program

Farmworkers are the backbone of our community. They plant, harvest, and pack the food that fills our tables. Their hard work and dedication keep our food supply strong, yet many face challenges in accessing healthcare. At Virginia Garcia, we believe that no one should have to choose between their health and their livelihood.

Meeting Farmworkers where they are, caring for their needs.

Farmworkers are the heart of our community, growing and harvesting the food that nourishes us all. Yet, many face challenges in accessing healthcare. At Virginia Garcia, we believe that quality, compassionate care should reach everyone, no matter where they live or work.

Our Farmworker Outreach Program brings medical and dental care directly to farmworkers and their families. Every summer, we visit migrant labor camps and nurseries across Washington and Yamhill counties, providing essential health services where they are needed most. Our mobile clinics and outreach team ensure that farmworkers get the care they deserve, right where they live and work.

For many farmworkers, this is the only healthcare they receive all year. Our team stays until every patient is seen because we know their health impacts us all. When farmworkers are supported, our entire community thrives.

Virginia Garcia is committed to providing high-quality, culturally appropriate care because healthcare is a human right, and everyone deserves to be healthy.

Timeline of Our Farmworker Outreach Program

Shortly thereafter, the St. Vincent hospital administrator directs its staff to ensure such a preventable tragedy would never happen again. They approach Centro Cultural about establishing a health care program.

July 1975

Centro Cultural, St. Vincent, the Washington County Migrant Health Advisory Board and others come together to open Virginia Garcia Memorial Health Center.

The goal was to provide high-quality health care to all, especially populations facing barriers to care regardless of ability to pay. Providers would speak the same language as patients and deliver culturally appropriate care.

During its first three months of operation, 1200 patients came, most being Latine farmworkers without health insurance. No one was turned away, but staff and supporters struggled to keep the doors open.

Virginia Garcia reaches 10,000 patient visits a year. Outreach efforts to migrant farmworker camps begin.

Virginia Garcia recognizes transportation as a major barrier to healthcare for migrant farmworkers. After a previous effort to have camp managers bring workers to the clinic saw limited success, Executive Director Jim Zaleski now proposes a more effective solution: delivering care directly to the farmworker camps.

We’re going to use the resources we have, but we’re going to use them in a different way. We plan to do more outreach work and health screening at the camps. We want to be more visible in the camps and in the community” - Jim Zaleski

1989

Virginia Garcia partners with Centro Cultural, Washington County Community Action Agency, St. Alexander Catholic Church and the Washington County sheriff's department to create educational tapes in Spanish to distribute to migrant camps.

The Virginia Garcia informational tape encouraged migrant workers to visit the clinic for care. It emphasized that the clinic is a safe, welcoming place that offers accessible, compassionate care to all, regardless of financial or immigration status. The message reassured workers that they can receive the help they need without fear or hesitation.

Why Access to Care Matters: A Personal Experience

At Virginia Garcia, we bring essential healthcare directly to the hardworking farmworkers who sustain our communities. Many, like Francisco, receive life-changing diagnoses and care that they may not have otherwise accessed.

Francisco Vázquez Serna Story

“I want to thank Virginia García for helping me, because I didn’t know I had diabetes. It was the first time I was tested, and I found out I had diabetes and high blood pressure. I felt down, but I didn’t know exactly what was wrong with me. Thanks to your support and services, I realized this and it changed a lot for me. I feel better thanks to you.”

“Quiero darle las gracias a Virginia García por haberme ayudado, porque yo no sabía que tenía diabetes y fue la primera vez que me hicieron un examen y salí con diabetes y alta presión. Yo me sentía mal, pero no sabía exactamente qué era lo que me pasaba. Gracias a su apoyo que ellos dan y gracias a sus servicios.”

Stories like Francisco’s remind us why this work matters. By bringing medical and dental care directly to farmworkers, we help them stay healthy, informed, and able to continue their vital work.
