Prevent Cancer, Protect Health: The Power of the HPV Vaccine
What is HPV?
Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a common virus—most people will get it at some point if they aren’t vaccinated. While some infections go away on their own, others can cause serious health problems, including cancer. HPV is responsible for six types of cancer, including cancer of the base of the tongue and the back of the throat (oropharyngeal cancer). In fact, HPV causes about two-thirds of all throat and tongue cancers in the U.S.
How Can You Prevent HPV-Related Cancers?
The HPV vaccine is safe and effective at preventing cancers caused by HPV. It works best when given to boys and girls between ages 9 and 12, before they are exposed to the virus. Young adults up to age 26 who haven’t been vaccinated should get the vaccine as soon as possible. However, vaccinating at a younger age provides the best protection against cancer.
